There has recently been a surge in eco-friendly tourism and sustainable travel, and rightfully so. As a traveler, I aim to make a positive impact wherever I go. Without sustainable travel, travelers would do more harm than good. That is why any traveler should focus on implementing sustainable travel tips into their trips.

Why are sustainable travel tips important?

Sustainable travel focuses on a form of travel that can be maintained long-term without negatively affecting the environment. Over the years, tourism has contributed to the environmental crisis. Now, is the time to address these issues and work towards reducing and reversing them.

If you want to do your part to protect nature, start by implementing some of these sustainable travel tips.

1. Recognize your impact on the environment

How does the saying go? The first step in solving a problem is recognizing there is one. The same can be said about the environment. Human action has harmed the environment, and you are no exception.

2. Learn about sustainability

You can’t make a change unless you know what kind of change needs to be made. Educate yourself on sustainability to better understand the problems that need to be addressed and how you can do your part

3. Choose a sustainable travel destination

Most people don’t consider sustainability when selecting a travel destination, but it can affect the impact you make. Of course, the closer to home you travel, the lower your carbon footprint. But, even if you travel further, you can select a destination that values and implements sustainability.

4. Choose eco-friendly accommodations

Not all accommodations are the same when it comes to sustainability. Some accommodations may have a commitment to sustainability initiatives or be recognized with green certifications.

5. Avoid flying (if possible)

While it’s not always feasible, try to avoid flying whenever possible. By choosing alternative methods of transportation, you can help by reducing your carbon footprint.

6. Fly direct

The highest amount of carbon emissions during a flight is during take off and landing. By booking a direct flight, you avoid this extra carbon emission.

7. Walk or bike (when possible)

If you want to make the lowest impact possible, walk or bike whenever possible. If it’s a couple blocks away, there’s no need to call an Uber. Walking is good for both your health and the health of the planet.

8. Take public transportation

If walking isn’t an option, public transportation is the way to go if you want to cut down on your environmental impact. Buses, trains, trams, subways, what have it. Any of these options is better than your own private taxi.

9. Travel slow

It’s simple; the slower you travel, the less carbon emissions you cause by hopping between destination.
